Xuan Qiwu was born on October 30, 1966 in Changchun, Jilin Province – the cradle of the Chinese automobile industry. He was admitted to the Department of Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University with excellent grades at the age of 16. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, he chose to return to his hometown Changchun to take up technology research and development work in the technology center of China FAW Group. In April 1992, he went to Japan to study automotive design and manufacturing theories and spent six years studying for a Ph.D. in engineering at Kyushu University. After graduation in 1998, he chose to work at Mitsubishi Motors, which had a relatively higher technological level of power development. As his career developed in Japan, he gained much professional and management experience. To apply the automotive technologies and concepts he learned in Japan for 10 years to China’s automotive industry, he decided to resign from Mitsubishi Motors to return home and established Beijing Jingwei Quanneng Technology Co., Ltd (predecessor of IAT Automobile Technology Co., Ltd.), a professional design company engaged in automobile development. In 2007, he formally founded IAT (China) Automobile Technology Co., Ltd. In 2012, the company was restructured into IAT Automobile Technology Co., Ltd., with Xuan Qiwu currently serving as chairman of the company.
