Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary, the U.S. Department of State
Matthew Goodman is Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
Prior to joining the State Department in August 2009, Goodman worked for five years at the Albright Stonebridge Group (formerly Stonebridge International LLC), a global business advisory firm based in Washington, D.C. He was Managing Director in charge of the firm’s Asia practice.
Goodman has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. From 2002 to 2004, he served at the White House as Director for Asian Economic Affairs on the staff of the U.S. National Security Council. He also worked for nine years (1988-1997) as an international economist at the U.S. Treasury Department, including five years at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, where he served as Financial Attaché.
In addition to Stonebridge, his private-sector experience includes five years (1997-2002) at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he headed the investment bank’s government affairs operations in Tokyo and London. Goodman began his professional career in the mid-1980s as a reporter and copy editor at Nikkei in Tokyo.
Goodman holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
